ASA Bans Philadelphia and Volkswagen Ads For Enforcing Gender Stereotypes

The Advertising Standard Authority (ASA) banned advertisements from Philadelphia cream cheese and Volkswagen claiming the two enforced harmful gender stereotypes.

The ban causes are viewed as a controversial issue to other advertising experts claiming the ASA watchdogs went too far; however, others are in favor of the ban. The ads showcased passive women -- one ad including a mother caregiver and the other depicting dads who aren’t good caregivers.

“We are naturally disappointed. ASA’s interpretation of the ads against the new rule and guidance goes further than we anticipated and has implications for a wide range of ads.” a spokesperson at Clearcast, the company in charge of reviewing advertisements prior to their broadcast, explained.
