To comply with California law, the media company will let go of 200 freelance writers working for SB Nation, its sports outlet.
The law was intended to help the gig economy for companies like Uber and Lyft, but also affects freelancers in the state. Vox will hire 20 full-time and part-time employees to replace the loss.
John Ness, executive director for SB Nation, explains, “This shift is part of a business and staffing strategy that we have been exploring over the past two years, but one that is also necessary in light of California’s new independent contractor law, which goes into effect January 1, 2020.”
