For the first time in its 131 years, Financial Times [named a female, Roula Khalaf, as its editor. ](https://www.nytimes.com/2019/11/12/business/media/financial-times-roula-khalaf.html)

The current editor, Lionel Barber, attributes her success to outstanding journalism qualities during her 24 years at the paper.

**Lionel Babar, Financial Times Editor since 2005, explains "**You mustn’t see this as some kind of ‘woke’ gesture — it’s got nothing to do with that. She is one of our most outstanding journalists. She’s been deputy editor for four years, she’s been tested in all sorts of areas, and that’s why she’s the next editor.”
