Google Hit with $170M Fine For YouTube Collecting Children’s Data

Google was fined $170M for YouTube violating children’s privacy. The company agreed to make changes to help protect children’s privacy while also allocating partial funds to the trade commission and the rest to New York State.

YouTube scored revenue from advertisements targeted toward children. Some legislators and experts claim it’s a simple slap on the wrist for the amount of information collected.

Sen. Edward J Markey, Democrat of Massachusetts, explains, “The F.T.C. let Google off the hook with a drop-in-the-bucket fine and a set of new requirements that fall well short of what is needed to turn YouTube into a safe and healthy place for kids.”
