Twitter Bans All Political Ads But Struggled With Definition of ‘Political’

Twitter said last month that it would ban all political advertisements but determining the definition of political seems to prove difficult for the social media giant. 

After meeting with media teams in Washington, it decided advertisements about elections, candidates, and parties would be defined as political. It also has plans in place to restrict micro-targeting and ads cannot mention specific legislation.

Vijaya Gadde, who is in charge of Twitter's legal policy, trust and safety divisions, explains, It’s a big change for us as a company but one we believe is going to make our service, and political advertising in the world, better.”
