U.S. Responds To Reporter Ban in China With Similar Restrictions

Last month, Beijing banned three Wall Street Journal reporters. In response, the Trump administration is limiting the number of Chinese citizens who work for five State Department news organizations.

Although the ‘eye for an eye’ strategy is the relationship that the two nations often have, reporters are the ones caught in diplomatic tensions.

Mike Pompeo, Secretary of State, explained, “Our goal is reciprocity. As we have done in other areas of the U.S.-China relationship, we seek to establish a long-overdue level playing field. It is our hope that this action will spur Beijing to adopt a more fair and reciprocal approach to U.S. and other foreign press in China.”
