International political unrest typically causes [mortgage interest rates to decline](https://www.nationalmortgagenews.com/news/middle-east-uncertainty-could-cause-mortgage-rates-to-fall). When global tensions are high, investors often put their money in U.S. bonds or government-guaranteed mortgage-backed securities, thus driving down interest rates.

According to Holden Lewis, NerdWallet’s expert in housing and mortgages, “…rates tend to drop in reaction to global instability, but that’s a tendency, not a certainty.”
