Statewide Rent Control Becomes Law in California

Responding to California’s housing affordability crisis, Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law statewide rent control in the country’s most populous state. It limits rent increases to 5% a year, plus inflation, and will protect 17-million renters from being evicted without cause.

Russell Lowery, executive director of the California Rental Housing Association, and a critic of the law said, “It adds unnecessary expenses to all rental home providers and makes it more difficult to sever a relationship with a problem tenant.”
