While there no concept vehicle to show off, Europe’s premier automaker and America’s leading aircraft manufacturer have teamed to explore what is being called Urban Air Mobility.

Referring to the rise of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV)—without using the word “flying,” Detlev von Platen, of Porsche AG explained that, “Porsche is looking to enhance its scope as a sports car manufacturer by becoming a leading brand for premium mobility. In the longer term, this could mean moving into the third dimension of travel.”

Detlev refers to this “third dimension” as a “potential key market segment of the future.”

Recent market research at Porche reflects what other industry analysts are predicting—that the demand for, and use of, autonomous aerial vehicles for urban transportation is going to be well established by 2025, and the Boeing-Porche team is positioning itself to participate in that market segment.

Boeing has already demonstrated a self-piloting (autonomous) passenger vehicle.
