Airline Safety is Up Despite Headline Crashes

The Aviation Safety Network (ASN), part of the Flight Safety Foundation, reported that 2019 has been one of the safest years for commercial aviation, in spite of several headline crashes and Boeing’s 737 MAX issues.

While there were 20 commercial airline crashes worldwide, resulting in a total of 283 deaths, 2019 was the “seventh safest year” for airlines.

ASNs’ calculations, put “the fatal accident rate at just one per 2 million flights.

There were, however, more fatal crashes in North America than in the past, several in rugged areas of northwestern states and Canada.

The single highest number of fatalities in the United States, were however, not attributed to an airliner accident but to the crash of a restored vintage World War II B-17 bomber that killed seven of 13 people on board.
