Mexico Eyeing Russian Helicopters

Mexico had a tentative order for eight Sikorsky MH-60R Seahawk helicopters for its Navy. However, Mexico’s president-elect, Andres Mannuel Lopez Obrador, said the price tag for the helicopters was too high.

The Russian News site, Sputnik, promptly reported, “Sikorsky and its parent company Lockheed Martin isn’t the only game in town as far as naval helicopters go. Russia’s naval workhorse, the Ka-27, has comparable capabilities, and would likely to be much cheaper, if it were made available.”

However, according to the former director of Mexico’s National Security Council, Inigo Guevara, says it is not likely Mexico would buy the Russian aircraft.

There is no firm order for the U.S. helicopters and the price estimates reported are likely to be somewhat less than that after a negotiated order. Guevara also explained that the final price would be negotiated and likely to be significantly less, and since the helicopters are to be assigned to naval vessels yet to be built, any purchase for helicopters would be spread over several years late in the 2020s.
