More Boeing Woes? “Unspecified Delay” May Push Back Deliveries of Boeing 777-8

Boeing says an “unspecified delay” may push back deliveries of the new Boeing 777-8 to Qantas Airlines. The ultra-long-range aircraft was to be used on Qantas’s Project Sunrise; direct flights from Sydney to London. While Boeing acknowledges the delay, it still anticipates being able to meet Qanta’s requirements and schedule.

According to a Boeing spokesperson, “The adjustment reduces risk in our development program, ensuring a more seamless transition to the 777-8. We continue to engage with our current and potential customers on how we can meet their fleet needs. This includes our valued customer Qantas.”

The delays, at least in part, may be related to delays in the production of the new General Electric GE9X engine. The company is redesigning the stator blades in the engines compressor section to improve engine life.

The aircraft was supposed to be ready for 2020 to 2021 delivery.
