More Woes for Boeing—Nearly 7,000 Aircraft Affected

In April 2018, a Boeing 737 NG engine fan blade broke off in flight, breaking a cabin window, resulting in the death of a passenger.

The National Transportation and Safety Board (NTSB) has recommended that the engine cowl be strengthened to contain engine parts in case of a fan blade failure.

NTSB Chairman Robert Sumwalt said, “The recommendations…are a reminder that it is not enough to do our best to prevent a failure. We also must actively work to identify ways to minimize the effects of failure if one occurs.”

Boeing said it is “committed to working closely with the FAA, engine manufacturers, and industry stakeholders to implement enhancements” to engine cowls to improve “their ability to withstand an engine fan blade out event…”

Boeing produced nearly 7,000 737 NG.

Following the NTSB’s recommendations, Boeing shares fell sharply, but recovered closing down 0.7% at $367.
