For someone in school, even middle school, there is an open door of opportunity ahead for those interested in a career as a commercial airline pilot.
According to an analysis by the Regional Airline Association, based on FAA data, nearly 50% of current airline pilots will have to retire within 15 years; many within five years.
In a recent email, Faye Malarkey Black, the association’s CEO and president, “We have seen renewed interest in the career path and an uptick in new pilots entering the system. Unfortunately, there are still too few pilots entering the pipeline to keep pace with those retiring.”
Young people interested in an aviation career should take the time to learn what is required. For example, many people believe you must have perfect uncorrected 20-20 vision to be a pilot. While there are health and vision requirements, corrective lenses are acceptable. And, while an aviation education is not cheap, the rewards of a career as a commercial airline pilot make it worthwhile to find a way.
