Space Wars Could be a Trashy Business

Written by Jeffrey Richmond | Jan 15, 2020 2:54:43 AM

One would assume that a space war would include capabilities to destroy an enemy’s orbiting satellites. But, this could create even bigger problems

For example, the Chinese destroyed a non-functional weather satellite with a device that simply blew it to pieces. Success—at what cost. The result was a debris field that includes more than 900 trackable pieces, that will remain in low earth orbit for years. There are likely many smaller pieces that are still hazardous to other satellites that cannot be tracked.

This is a challenge that the newly formed the United States Space Force must deal with.

For example, a space conflict between two major powers could effectively destroy enemy satellites, and in the process, make space practically unusable for anyone.

The challenge for the Space Force is to determine how to “wage war” in orbit without creating hazardous or impenetrable fields of orbiting space debris.
