Brookline, Massachusetts residents voted to ban natural gas hookups in new homes and renovated buildings.

Following the trend set by Berkeley, CA in July, a town in New England has voted to decrease the city’s carbon footprint. This shift from greening electrical generation to focusing on the climate impacts of heating and cooling may represent a catching trend within more liberal communities.

“We need to do something about climate change,” Werner Lohe, one of the measure’s sponsors, told The Boston Globe. “We need to stop burning fossil fuels inside our buildings. ... This is the first step in Brookline toward an all-electric, all-renewable-energy world.”
