The U.S. Department of Energy announced the start of a new comprehensive program aimed at accelerating the development and launch of next-generation energy storage technologies.

The Department of Energy is offering a suite of support opportunities for private companies developing advanced energy storage solutions, including R&D funding opportunities, prizes, and partnerships. The program adds $158 million in funding to the existing energy storage initiatives included in the White House’s Fiscal Year 2020 budget request. The program aims at helping the country meet technology development and transfer goals in national energy policy.

"Energy storage is key to capturing the full value of our diverse energy resources," says Department of Energy Secretary Dan Brouillette. "Through this Grand Challenge, we will deploy the Department's extensive resources and expertise to address the technology development, commercialization, manufacturing, valuation, and workforce challenges to position the U.S. for global leadership in the energy storage technologies of the future."
