Fears of Spoiled Ocean Views Reopen Review of Planned Offshore Windfarm

Although the Maryland Public Service Commission approved a $2 billion offshore wind farm located off the Atlantic town of Ocean City nearly two years ago, changes in potential aesthetic impact have prompted renewed scrutiny.

Developers say offshore turbines will be 200 feet taller than initially proposed, reopening the discussion about the project. The change has prompted an additional review of the projects, which includes an opportunity for public input, led by the Maryland Public Service Commission. Although officials have declined to speculate on the possible outcome of the Commission’s actions, it does have the authority to cancel ratepayer funding for the $2 billion renewable energy project.

“It will change the horizon of the town of Ocean City forever,” Mayor Rick Meehan said.
