Germany plans to phase out coal and nuclear power, replacing major grid resources with hydrogen.

German lawmakers have invested $110 million each year in new research laboratories aimed at developing hydrogen technologies for utility-scale applications. This has been matched by equal interest from the private sector, which has also been investing in hydrogen-powered infrastructure.

"Hydrogen is one of the hottest topics in the energy transition in the country at the moment,” said Inga Posch, managing director at FNB Gas e.V., the federation of Germany’s gas network operators. “The interest from the private sector is really huge. Germans have been too focused on the electrification of the economy, so we are starting on the process with a delay.”
