Nigeria LNG (NLNG) has committed to building a seventh production train at its natural gas liquefaction plant on Bonny Island. The consortium, which includes Nigerian National Petroleum Corp. (NNPC) and three international majors, signed documents formalizing the final investment decision (FID) on the project on December 27.
Train 7 will lift NLNG’s production capacity to 30 million tons per year, a 35% increase on the present level. As such, it will help Nigeria reverse a decline in LNG output that began last year.
According to Mele Kyari, NNPC’s group managing director, NLNG is eyeing further expansion. Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has instructed the consortium to make plans for the construction of five more production trains, bringing the total number up to 12, he explained.
This demonstrates Nigeria’s determination to continue the development of its gas industry, Kyari said. “It also signifies that there is renewed confidence [among] international investors, particularly our partners which we have known for a long time, to still agree to put money back into this country,” he added.
