The International Renewable Energy Agency reported a 5% growth in total renewable energy generation in 2017. 

These [meaningful gains ](https://sdg.iisd.org/news/irena-report-finds-5-increase-in-renewable-energy-compared-to-2016/)in worldwide renewable power generation capacity were driven by strong growth in solar, which increased 35% between 2106 and 2017. In total, renewable energy growth in 2017 was 293 terawatt hours higher than the previous year.
