Televisions capable of Internet connection and facial recognition raise new security threats.
Beyond the privacy concerns posed by the legitimate collection of data by smart TV manufacturers and other private companies, the FBI has recently warned consumers about the threat of potential cyber intrusions. The warning advised smart TV owners to be aware of privacy settings on their devices, particularly with respect to microphone and camera access.
"At the low end of the risk spectrum, they can change channels, play with the volume, and show your kids inappropriate videos," the FBI warning states. "In a worst-case scenario, they can turn on your bedroom TV's camera and microphone and silently cyberstalk you."
