Instagram will be asking new users to confirm their ages when they start an account.

In a step towards greater compliance with the spirit of the Child Online Privacy Protection Act, Instagram will be requiring new users to confirm that they are over the age of 13 by entering their birthdays at first login. The popular social media app will also confirm age by for users who link their Instagram accounts to their Facebook pages.

"Asking for this information will help prevent underage people from joining Instagram, help us keep young people safer and enable more age-appropriate experiences overall," Instagram explained.
