Twitter Tests New DM Filter to Fight Spam and Abuse

Twitter launched the platform’s first direct message filter designed to prevent unsolicited DMs that contain abusive language or spam.

Twitter’s new feature files DMs from strangers in a separate folder than messages from mutual friends for accounts open to direct messages from anyone. In addition to allowing users to approve or deny “Message requests,” the filter separates out “Additional messages,” from strangers that “may contain offensive content” users must click to see.

“Unwanted messages aren’t fun,” explained the official Twitter Support account, “So we’re testing a filter in your DM requests to keep those out of sight, out of mind.”
